Choose a good room thermostat

A room thermostat is used to measure and regulate the temperature in living and office spaces. It is a device that controls the temperature of the room according to the user’s settings – at the right moment it starts or turns off the boiler. Thanks to room thermostats, we avoid overheating interiors and wasting money due to excessive consumption of energy (nowadays increasingly expensive, regardless of its type).

Why burn more than necessary, risking costs and bad health? It is much better to control the consumption of heating energy in zones. That is why we use room temperature thermostats in each room. There are many such products on the market, but the large selection can be a trap. Some devices only allow you to maintain a constant set temperature, others offer extensive operating schedules. Before buying, it is worth doing some research to choose a really good room thermostat.

How does a room temperature thermostat work?

The thermostat communicates by wire or wireless with our heating appliance or cooperates with it indirectly, for example, by a control box (underfloor heating). In this way it controls the moment of switching on and off the heat source, the length of its operation, the temperature reached and maintained. So the principle is simple, but the effects are priceless.

A good room thermostat – what does it mean?

First of all, precise and easy to use. Modern temperature thermostats owe their effectiveness to control algorithms that keep an eye on the rhythm of heating operation with mathematical precision. On the other hand, even the best functions won’t be effective, if access to them is difficult, or if using them is complicated and inconvenient. Therefore, it is important that the menu is clear to the user, and the programming of the work cycle depends on lifestyle and individual expectations. Let’s adapt the model of thermostats to the needs of each users. Only then will we be able to say with confidence that we have chosen a good room thermostat.

A big advantage is also the versatility of the thermostats, that is, the ability to control the heating, but also the cooling system. It is important to keep this in mind when choosing, since in recent years the holiday season has been very hot. Many of us decide to buy air conditioners or fan coils, which are also worth controlling.

It is good to pay attention to the display’s visibility and brightness, the possibility of backlighting, as well as the smooth operation of the buttons. Operational conveniences such as key and menu locking, and minimum and maximum set temperature settings are also helpful.

In finished interiors, we have limited options for wiring. Therefore, it is good if there is a choice of power supply options (230V or batteries) within a single thermostat model. Similarly, in the case of wired (230V) and wireless (transmitter, receiver) thermostats. Then we can better match the control system to any conditions.

New technologies are developing fast. For many of us, it is standard to operate the heating system through a mobile application with a wide range of applications (such as the appreciated TUYA Smart). Such a solution allows you to control heating (and more) from anywhere. For a large group of people, a good room thermostat should have this function.

It may be considered a secondary issue, but at the time of purchase everyone pays attention to the aesthetic aspect. A good room thermostat should harmonize with the interior design, which is why a subtle, even minimalist design and a classic color scheme are so important.

Finally, we can not forget about warranty and post-warranty care. If the technology manufacturer is confident in the quality of the products offered, it will always take care of a sufficiently long warranty period at no extra charge. It will also provide technical advice throughout the life of the equipment. ENGO Controls offers all this.

The benefits of choosing a good room thermostat:

  1. the heating control system gives you full control over the degree of heating of the building without unnecessary waste of energy and excessive reheating of areas where you expect lower temperatures (such as the kitchen, bedroom, laundry room);
  2. thermostats help to diversify the temperature depending on the function of the rooms, time of day, weather conditions;
  3. good room thermostats allow us to maintain an appropriate temperature difference (for example, during our absence from home). This will avoid too large cooling and therefore more energy is required to reheat the interiors.

6 things to remember when you choose a good room thermostat

Let’s summarize what to pay attention to when choosing the ideal heating control device for you:

  • The way it works: let’s check whether the thermostat we are considering only sends an on and off signal to the heating device, or has more advanced programming. Let’s choose the kind of model we need.
  • Thermostat compatibility: not every temperature thermostat will work with our heating device. Before buying, let’s check whether the chosen thermostat operates a coal boiler, gas boiler, electric boiler, heat pump – depending on your needs.
  • Method of control: let’s pay attention to if the thermostat has a display. Is it controlled with buttons (this increases precision) or a knob (such thermostats are intended for less demanding users)? If you care about control via a mobile app, be sure to check whether the thermostat gives you this advantage.
  • Mounting method and range: we choose a room thermostat first of all in terms of the needs of our building. Let’s make sure whether it works by wire or wireless. In the first case we will have to run wires, in the second the operation of the device is based on the cooperation of the transmitter and the receiver. Here, however, the range declared by the manufacturer (usually given for open space) is important. We need to know more or less at what distance from the heating device the thermostat will be located and whether the signal will not be disturbed by architectural barriers.
  • Range and accuracy of control: check whether the thermostat will be able to cool the interiors if necessary, as well as the range of fault in its operation. Control algorithms work with high precision, but always assume a small margin of error. By default, it should not exceed +/- 0.5 – 1 degree Celsius.
  • User facilities: a good temperature thermostat is equipped with features that, although they do not affect its operation, are sometimes helpful. These include, for example, a backlit display, clear markings, temperature calibration, setting the minimum and maximum comfort temperature.

Remember that in order to choose a really good temperature thermostat, you need to be careful and know the needs of your building. You should trust manufacturers who are confident enough in the quality of their equipment to offer the customer a long warranty period and free technical advice.
